Welcome to What to Wear
One of the questions I’m asked most often by my clients is what should I wear for my family photos. I get it. It’s a ton of pressure to pick out outfits that hit the right note. Coordinated (but not too matchy), stylish (but classic), beautiful (but also functional).
I’m excited to be sharing a new weekly feature called “What to Wear”. I’m hoping this series will give you some ideas and guidelines on what type of clothing works well for family photos. Every Thursday, I will be sharing a mood board and shopping guide. Each week will feature a new set of outfits and an explanation on why they work so well together.
What to Wear and Why it Works: Newborn Shoot
This week I’ve put together outfits for a family of four that recently welcomed a a new baby. The mom requested something feminine but comfortable. She also wanted to buy outfits for her kids that they would wear more than once. Her husband wanted simple, comfortable and casual.
Toddler Girl
I started with the mauve overalls and paired them with a small print floral top. The ruffle and mauve colour add a feminine touch and nice texture without being over the top. The overalls are a great addition to any kid’s wardrobe and are more likely to be worn again than a frilly little dress. Source: Ruffled Overalls from Zara and floral print shirt from Zara
Newborn Baby
This family didn’t know if they were having a boy or a girl so they opted for a gender neutral outfit that they were able to purchase before the baby arrived. Made of a luxurious blend of silk and cotton, this creamy white knit has a classic feel and beautiful texture that will add additional dimension to their photographs. Dress for Mom
A feminine floral dress for mom that will work into the summer months. The mauve flowers tie into the little girl’s outfit without being too matchy. Cap sleeves and buttons up the front means this mom can wear a nursing bra and easily breastfeed. The a-line silhouette is flattering without being too form fitting. Knee length means she feels comfortable bending over and chasing a toddler. Source: Thea Floral Dress from Anthropologie.
Comfort for Dad
Simple, no fuss and comfortable clothing for dad. In this case, I picked a navy and white striped long sleeve t-shit with a clean dark wash denim pant. His outfit looks stylish and put together without stealing the show from his partner and her amazing dress.
